Gordon Brown visited Afghanistan today to praise British troops, but couldn’t escape questions about his leadership.

To his obvious irritation, the news conference was dominated by questions from British reporters about his political plight at home and a possible leadership challenge by Foreign Secretary David Miliband.

Carla Bruni, France’s First Lady, has drawn the wrath of Pyrenean farmers by taking up the cause of local brown bears, whose reintroduction has fuelled a violent feud between naturalists and sheep breeders.

The anti-bear camp dismissed Ms Bruni, a supermodel and pop singer, as a typical animal-loving city slicker after she weighed into the quarrel that has raged since Jacques Chirac, the previous President, moved to rescue the dwindling bear population three years ago.

Officials say it is too early to say how many troops will be withdrawn The outgoing commander of British forces in Iraq has indicated that most of the 4,100 UK troops in the country could be withdrawn by next summer. Maj Gen Barney White-Spunner said the Iraqi-led crackdown on Shia militia groups in Basra had improved security and they would not regain control. Militants in the oil-rich Niger Delta region have sabotaged two pipelines belonging to the Dutch oil company, Royal Dutch Shell. The militant Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) say they carried out the attacks in accordance with threats they made earlier this month. “In keeping with our pledge to resume pipeline attacks within the next thirty days, detonation engineers backed by heavily armed fighters… sabotaged two major pipelines in Rivers state of Nigeria,” the group said in an e-mailed statement.
