US election: Clinton and Biden rouse Democrats in call for unity

Democrats overcame bruised egos and a rancorous primary campaign tonight to line up solidly behind Barack Obama as their party’s official presidential nominee and open up a coordinated and devastating attack against the Republican, John McCain.

Hours after Hillary Clinton led Democrats in making Obama the official nominee, Joe Biden used his debut performance as the vice-presidential candidate to establish his bona fides as the Democrats’ attack dog.

The full frontal assault on McCain’s main strength as a candidate - his expertise on national security - was reinforced with a bravura speech from Bill Clinton intended to dispel any doubt that he was on board with Obama.

The former president thrilled convention attendees with what amounted to a whole-hearted endorsement Read more »

Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 to Include ‘Porn Mode’

The next version of Microsoft Corp.’s Web browser makes it easier for people to surf the Internet without leaving a trace.

Microsoft’s latest Internet browser includes a piece of software that allows Internet users to hide the audit trail of websites they have visited.

The InPrivate feature on Internet Explorer 8, nicknamed “porn mode”, allows users to conceal the sites they have viewed at the click of a button.

Once the setting is chosen, others using the same computer will not be able to see which sites have been accessed. Other browsers have similar functions, but this one is far more prominent. Although casual users cannot see the previous user’s search history, authorities such as the police will be able to access it if necessary.

The software may be hailed as a victory for privacy campaigners, but it represents a serious threat to Microsoft’s bigger rival, Google. In allowing surfers to access websites but conceal their browsing behaviour, Microsoft prevents Internet sites from collecting information about their users — data that is then used to sell targeted Read more »

Putin accuses U.S. of orchestrating Georgian war

Russian PM Vladimir Putin has accused the U.S. of orchestrating the conflict in Georgia.
Russian PM Vladimir Putin has accused the U.S. of orchestrating the conflict in Georgia.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has accused the United States of orchestrating the conflict in Georgia to benefit one of its presidential election candidates.
In an exclusive interview with CNN’s Matthew Chance in the Black Sea city of Sochi Thursday, Putin said the U.S. had encouraged Georgia to attack the autonomous region of South Ossetia.

Putin told CNN it was done to benefit a presidential candidate — Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama are competing to succeed George W. Bush.

Putin said Russia had no choice but to invade Georgia after some of its peacekeepers in South Ossetia were killed. He told Chance it was to avert a human calamity.

The former Russian president, still considered the most powerful man in the country, Read more »

Tax rebates have encouraged consumers to spend more

The US economy grew at a revised 3.3% annually in the second quarter of 2008, the Commerce Department said, much higher than its first estimate of 1.9%.

The rebound was linked to strong US exports, helped by the weak dollar, while government tax rebates also boosted consumer spending.

GDP grew at a rate of 0.9% in the first quarter, after a 0.2% contraction in the last three months of 2007.

The Federal Reserve has warned the economy will remain weak this year.

Exports grew at an annualised rate of 13.2%, higher than the government’s initial estimate of 9.2%.

Imports fell at a rate of 7.6% as the US economic slowdown reduced demands for goods made overseas.

The improved trade balance added 3.1 percentage points to second-quarter GDP,

Terrence Howard attends a news conference for the movie “The Brave One” during the 32nd Toronto International Film Festival in Toronto September 7, 2007.

Terrence Howard earned an Oscar nomination for his role as a pimp aspiring to be a rapper in “Hustle & Flow” but the 2005 movie also shone a spotlight on the actor’s musical talents and helped him land a record deal.

Howard releases his debut album “Shine Through It” on Tuesday. But it’s nothing like the hip-hop he performed as Djay, which included Three 6 Mafia’s 2006 Academy Award-winning song, “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp.”

“Imagine Don McLean growing up in Cleveland in the ’70s and if he was black, with a little bit of Cat Stevens twisted into his words and a little bit of Richie Havens — that’s the thought behind it,” Read more »

To shouts of “Yes we can,” Democrats nominated Barack Obama on Wednesday as their presidential candidate in a historic first for a black American, backed by his ex-rivals Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Obama made his first appearance at the Democratic National Convention, stepping out on stage after his vice presidential running mate, Sen. Joe Biden, attacked Republican John McCain as he accepted the nomination as No. 2 on the ticket.

“I think the convention has gone pretty well so far. What do you think?” Obama said to cheering delegates after hugging Biden and his wife Jill on stage.

Pelosi Daughter Making McCain Film

Aug. 25, 2008: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi speaks at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Almost more than the convention of Barack Obama, the 2008 DNC is like a party given for and by Nancy Pelosi.

The House Majority Leader is a ubiquitous dynamo, an Energizer bunny pushing the Democratic platform, explaining and extolling the Obamas, making everything seem right in the world to anyone who might be worried or have Read more »
