Russia says no to war, sanctions on Iran

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says he will not accept military action or new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear activities.

“We should not take any unilateral steps. It is not acceptable to opt for a military scenario. It would be dangerous,” President Medvedev said Friday at the Valdai Club, which sees journalists and academics specializing on Russia.

His remarks come as speculation runs high that Israel and the US are drawing up plans to launch a military strike against Iran in a bid to hamper the country’s nuclear program.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy suggested last week that should Iran continue with its uranium enrichment program, it could be attacked by Israel.
“We could find one morning that Israel has struck (Iran),” said the French president, adding that no one would question the legitimacy of such an act of aggression.

Iran ‘master of asymmetric naval warfare’

A US-based think tank says Iran’s navy forces are capable of waging a unique asymmetric warfare against larger naval forces.

The report by The Washington Institute for the Near East Policy authored by Fariborz Haghshenas, an expert on the Iranian military, says that in the two decades since the Iran-Iraq War, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps Navy (IRGCN) has been transformed into a highly motivated, well-equipped, and well-financed force.

The study sheds light on the historical evolution of Iran’s approach to asymmetric warfare, assessing its naval forces and evaluating its plans for a possible war with the US.

The report says Iran, with such a strong navy force, is effectively holding the world’s oil lifeline, the Strait of Hormuz.

The study concludes that Iran is capable of taking preemptive action in response to a perceived threat of imminent attack.

In the event of a US attack, the scale of Iran’s response would likely be proportional to the scale of the damage inflicted on Iranian assets, the report says.

Strong earthquake strikes southern Iran, destroyed villages

A strong earthquake measured at magnitude 6.1 Wednesday demolished nearly 200 villages in Iran, leaving at least one person dead, local media reported.

The hit villages in Iran’s Hormozgan Province, according to Iran’s Press TV, citing the head of the provincial disaster management headquarters, Yasser Hazbavi.

At least three people were killed and 22 others were injured, Hazbavi told Press TV.

People panicked and fled buildings when the quake struck in the quake-prone region around 1100 GMT, Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported. It also knocked out power to the region.

The epicenter was located about 55 km (35 miles) west-southwest of Bandar e-Abbas, Iran — which is just across the narrow Strait of Hormuz from the United Arab Emirates — according to U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake shook nearby Dubai, where CNN staff members said they felt the building they were in shake for about 15 to 20 seconds.

“From my office window at the Dubai Media City where all foreign media are located, I can see that a lot of offices have evacuated buildings,” CNN Dubai Bureau Chief Samson Desta said.

“I can see up to perhaps 200 people who have taken refuge out in the streets, causing somewhat of a traffic jam.”

There was no evidence of any damage in Dubai, where there are a lot of high-rise buildings.

Iran lies on a series of seismic fault lines and has experienced devastating earthquakes — most notably in December, 2003 when a 6.6 magnitude quake devastated the ancient city of Bam in southeast Iran, killing at least 30,000 people. Subscribe=>

Iran parliament body scraps polygamy proposal

Tehran: Iran’s parliamentary committee has thrown out a proposal that activists feared would have encouraged polygamy in country, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Activists have lobbied against the bill on families, which they said would have allowed a man to take a new wife without the consent of the first one.

The bill also covered other family issues. Parliament is expected to vote on the amended version.

Newspapers quoted committee chairman Ali Shahrokhi as saying it had removed two articles which had angered activists: one dealing with polygamy and another on taxing money the husband agrees to pay his wife under a marriage contract.

Under Iran’s Islamic law, men can have up to four wives but many Iranians see polygamy as unacceptable and it is not common.

Shahrokhi said families would have been “exposed to collapse” under the proposal on polygamy.

“We did not see this article as logical and we deleted it,” Etemad daily quoted him as saying. “Iranian families and women should know that we are not indifferent to their issues.”
