Zimbabwe’s rival leaders reach power-sharing deal
Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe and main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai have reached a power-sharing deal after months of political deadlock. The chief mediator to the negotiations South African President Thabo Mbeki told reporters in Harare that full details of the deal would be announced after a formal signing ceremony on Monday. Zimbabwe has been in political limbo since March elections in which Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change beat Mugabe’s ruling ZANU-PF. Tsvangirai also won the presidential poll but fell short of enough votes to avoid a runoff. Mugabe subsequently won the second presidential vote in June after Tsvangirai pulled out of the race due to violence against his supporters.
