Putin warns Britain against harbouring Russian dissidents
‘That’s why it’s not possible to build normal relations with the UK.’
Referring to British exile for a prominent Chechen dissident, Mr Putin added: If we were to give safe haven to militants from the IRA, with weapons in their hands, what would you do?
Russia was criticised by the United States and European governments for sending troops into Georgia last month and recognising the two breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states.
But during a three-hour lunch briefing at his retreat in the Black Sea resort of Sochi, Mr Putin said: ‘What did you expect us to do? Respond with a catapult? … We punched the aggressor in the face.’
He accused the U.S. administration of stoking the conflict to help the Republican candidate in the race for the White House.
He said: ‘There is no more Soviet threat but they are trying to resurrect it.
‘Today there are no ideological contradictions, there is no basis for a Cold War … Russia has no imperialist ambitions.’
