Judge throws out corruption charges against Zuma
Nicholson described as “unfair and unjust” Mbeki’s dismissal of Zuma as his deputy in 2005 after a court sentenced a close associate of Zuma’s to 15 years in jail for arranging for a French arms company to bribe Zuma to shield it against corruption investigations. Zuma was not called to appear in that court case and so had no chance to defend himself.
Amid the legal proceedings, senior ANC figures have accused top judges, including those of the highest court, of bias for handing down a series of rulings against Zuma.
The corruption case was not Zuma’s only recent legal entanglement. He was acquitted of rape in 2006.
Zuma has used his legal battles to burnish his populist reputation, portraying himself as a victim of a plot by the elite to keep the son of a maid out of the president’s office.
