Russian FM says troops will remain in Black Sea provinces for a long time
Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has said that Russian troops will stay in Georgia’s breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia for a long time to come. Lavrov’s statement comes after a French-brokered deal that saw Russia agree to pull out of Georgia once 200 EU monitors had been deployed. The deal does not apply to the Black Sea republic’s separatist regions. Russian troops entered Georgia last month in defence of what Moscow called Georgian agression against South Ossetia. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has since refused to reverse Moscow’s decision to recognise the two rebel regions despite Georgian and international protest. Russia’s Defence Ministry has said it expects to send 7,600 servicemen to South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
